Robert H. “Bob” Cauthen is the President of SCMS, Inc., a radio equipment distributor and service provider in the broadcast industry based in Charlotte, NC.  He founded SCMS in 1976.  In 1977, Bob attended his first NAB and has gone to 32 consecutives NAB conventions since. That same year, Bob married his wife Gloria D. Hinkle, who he credits much of his success to.

In 2005, Bob assisted with the first live US testing of FM Multiple Audio Channels on HD.  In 2006, SCMS, Inc. organized and hosted a major Digital Radio Conference in Charlotte, NC.  He negotiated for SCMS, Inc. to acquire the assets of the Harris Broadcast Center and Bradley Broadcast in 2007 and 2009, respectively.  Through acquisition, innovation, and organic growth, Bob has grown the company to one of the largest distributors of broadcast equipment worldwide. The company is a multi-million dollar debt-free organization that is headquartered in a 12,000 square foot facility in Charlotte.  SCMS also has a dozen sales offices across the USA.  Even though the company has grown from a two-bedroom apartment to a huge facility, it still maintains a family environment.  Bob also runs the company with his sons, Matt and Ben, on his team.

Bob has a BSEE Degree from Clemson University and worked as an electrical engineer for the US Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, FL.  He also has a pilot’s license with commercial, multi, and instrument ratings.  Bob was in the US Army Signal Corps with two years of active duty at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama.  He worked for EG&G in Columbus, OH as a technical sales engineer selling nuclear research equipment immediately prior to founding SCMS, Inc.
